As we approach the 50th
anniversary of our foundation as a Camaldolese
Hermitage in July 2008, we, the monks of New
Camaldoli, have been given the opportunity to look
to the future and plan for generations of monks who
will follow us. |
 |
During the El Niņo storms of 1998, many of our
buildings suffered damage beyond repair. When the
original Hermitage was built in 1958, there
were no building codes, materials were sub-standard,
and finances were extremely limited. Thus, the
existing structures are at the end of their life
cycle and it's time to renovate and retrofit the
facilities. A Master Plan has been completed to
rebuild the Hermitage using the latest sustainable,
environmentally-responsible, green technology in
order to provide a safe, comfortable life for the
hermit monks now and into the future.
We plan to create a very special community that
blends seamlessly into our spectacular natural
surroundings both architecturally and in terms of
material. Materials and construction methods are
chosen with the goal of being low-maintenance,
cost-effective, yet lifetime materials, so this
place of discovery will exist for many future
generations. |
The Master Plan represents
three years of hard work that we monks have
accomplished with our project team. But most
importantly, this plan ultimately represents what I
believe is God's desire for us and for the
Camaldolese presence in America.
We invite you to visit us, attend any of our four
services a day, enjoy our hospitality, browse our
bookstore, bring a picnic lunch, experience the
serenity paralelled between the beautiful views of
the mountains and ocean, or plan an extended visit
in one of our retreat rooms.
In faith, and with trust, I ask you to consider our
plan and answer our request for the financial
contribution that you may be able to offer. Be
assured of our prayer for you and for your
intentions.
Peace,
Rev. Raniero Hoffman, O.S.B.Cam
